Decker's family was a military one and lived in Louisiana when she was just nine years old. She was the winner of the talent contest with a performance of Patsy Montana's I Want to Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart. At the age of 15, Decker was living in Georgia. She began writing songs and making frequent trips to Nashville in search of recording deals.
